בתקופת פיתגורס נהגו לייצג מספרים באמצעות אבנים, שנקראו ביוונית בשם פספוי, ומהן יש לנו היום בעברית את המילה פסיפס. התמונה לעיל ממחישה, במידת מה, את המראה המקורי שיכול היה להיות לפיתגורס כשהגה את המשפט שלו, שהפך, ברבות השנים, למשפט הידוע ביותר בתורת הגאומטריה.
